PATS
Pets Assisting Tamariki in Schools (PATS)
What is PATS?
This programme is generally one-on-one but can be in pairs or in a group setting. Children with
reading challenges read to the dog, which helps improve literacy and build confidence. Further
benefits are explained (here – linked to ‘why we do it’)

Benefits for a School and the child
School staff and volunteers described the advantages of involving an animal in a remedial reading
programme as follows:
Â
-
It shifts the child’s focus from the adult in the room to the dog.
-
The child experiences learning as fun, informal and less intimidating.
-
The child reads to a non-judgmental, unconditionally devoted listener.
-
Touching the dog reduces a child’s anxiety about reading.
-
The child feels special and appreciated because they have been chosen to have time with the dog.
